Toubkal Circuit is a 6-day Mount Toubkal trek via Ifni Lake and spectacular high passes, with the time to explore Berber villages.
Your trek begins on Day 1 with a scenic transfer from Marrakech to Imlil village, where your adventure starts. After passing through the charming villages of Ait Souka and Tamarert, you will ascend to Tizi n’Tmatert pass at 2,370m. The day’s trek is approximately 5 hours, culminating in the last high village of Techdert for an overnight stay.
On Day 2, prepare for an exciting climb to Tizi Likmet pass at 3,600m, where the panoramic views of the Atlas Mountains will take your breath away. Descending to the nomadic village of Azzib Likmet, you will witness the daily lives of the Berber people. You will camp in tents for the night after approximately 6 hours of walking.
Day 3 starts with a morning trek through the Aworay valley, encountering Berber nomads along the way. Ascending to the Ouray pass, enjoy amazing views of Oudman valley and the iconic Toubkal peak. You will then descend, passing through Tagnit village, and stay overnight in Amesouzart village after a 6-hour trek.
On Day 4, the hike leads you to the scenic Lake Ifni, where you can enjoy a leisurely lunch by the water. This day is shorter, allowing for some relaxation and possibly a refreshing swim, covering approximately 3 hours of walking.
Day 5 takes you to the Toubkal Refuge, where you will ascend to Tizi Wanoumse pass at 3,600m. The trek brings you into Toubkal valley, where the base camp awaits at 3,207m, taking around 6 hours to complete.
Finally, on Day 6, rise early for the challenging ascent to Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa at 4,167m. Witness the beautiful sunrise and gorgeous views across the Sahara, High Atlas, and Anti-Atlas ranges. After an unforgettable experience at the summit, you will descend back to Imlil and transfer back to Marrakech, with the day’s trek taking approximately 8 to 9 hours.

We leave Marrakech after breakfast and drive to Imlil via Asni. Imlil is the principal trailhead for walkers, and a busy market town. There is a constant movement of people coming down from the mountains, and an equal supply of activity from those about to embark on their adventure. We meet our mule team and once all our gear is loaded we begin walking along the valley towards Tacheddirt, some 8kms beyond Imlil. Soon the trail begins to rise as we climb up to the pass at Tizi n'Tamaterte (2279m). We then descend to the pretty village of Ouanskra and continue, for a further half-hour or so, to Tacheddirt (3000m), where we generally camp near the river.
Crossing the valley we begin a long, slow ascent to the pass at Tizi Likkemt (3555m). The going is quite tough as there is a considerable amount of loose scree on the ground. At the top we enjoy our first fine view of the Toubkal massif before a long downhill descent to the village of Azib Likkemt, where we camp for the night.
This long, but relatively easy, day takes us through a variety of contrasting landscapes. From Tizi n’Ououraine (3120m) we enjoy further views of the Toubkal massif, including the summit, the east face and the Ifni Dome (3876m). The trail leads on towards Amsouzert, one of the most striking villages in the region, where we spend the night – dormitory-style - in a simple village Gite.
West of Amsouzert is several small villages, which we explore as we make our way towards Ifni Lake, the only lake in the massif. It is a memorable sight, surrounded by Rocky Mountains and giant heaps of rubble, and is unusually deep. We expect to arrive by lunchtime and spend the afternoon relaxing at the shore. We camp tonight in this area.
By now we should be both fit and acclimatized, and ready to tackle the hardest day of the trek. We make our way along a steep path that leads up a seemingly endless scree slope. At length we reach the pass at Tizi n'Ouanoums (3664m), a narrow ledge between two shafts of rock. From here it is a long zigzag descent to Nelter Hut, a mountain refuge where we spend the night (or alternatively camp outside).
We leave before dawn, following a well-worn route to the summit. If conditions are good it should take no more than 2-3 hours to reach the summit, where we enjoy expansive views of the entire Atlas range and the Marrakech plains beyond. Returning to base, we then descend fairly rapidly to the villages of Sidi Chamharouch and Armed, before following the Maizane River, along a well-forested trail, transfer to Marrakech
